Adolescence is a time of considerable change and upheaval. While self absorption, risk-taking and a rollercoaster of changing emotions may be a normal part of development, it can also feel overwhelming to young people and parents alike. Excitement, adventure and discovery co-exist alongside fear, anxiety, anger and uncertainty. Feeling ill-equipped to deal with the challenges, parents and young people often feel so overwhelmed by difficulties that they miss out on the good times as well.
For young people, intense emotional and physical changes combined with increasing social and societal pressures can lead to confusion and fear. Confidence and independence can evaporate, leaving many unanswered questions, “Who am I?”; “What am I going to do?”; “Where am I going?”
For parents, the experience of parenting a young person can feel just as confusing, undermining and frustrating. Rapid shifts in moods and the explosive intensity of feelings can create enormous pressure on parents and families.
Mosman Parent & Child understands these challenges. Opportunities are provided for young people and their parents to express their feelings; to understand their experiences and navigate their way through this often difficult time.
