Play Therapy

Play therapy is an approach to counselling children that utilises the natural language of play. Play therapy operates on the basis that all play has meaning for a child. Through the manipulation of toys, children can often show more easily than through words how they feel about themselves; their relationships and events in their lives.

Qualified child therapists are trained to understand the communication and emotional meaning of children’s play. In play therapy, most therapists will combine play and talking to understand and help children manage their feelings. For children, the opportunity to express their difficult feelings to someone who consistently listens and responds in a non-judgmental manner is the key to progress.

Play therapy typically works with children experiencing a broad range of difficulties.

  • Play therapy sessions usually last 40-45minutes – therapy is hard work and for most children this is ample time to think about or experience different feelings.
  • Play therapy usually takes place in a specially arranged Play Room. The child therapist must carefully select toys that will help children to express their thoughts and feelings. The atmosphere of comfort and consistency in the play therapy setting helps children feel safe in communicating difficult experiences or feelings.
  • The relationship that develops between the therapist and the child is very important. The child must feel safe, respected and understood.

For some children, ongoing therapy is not required – a few sessions with a child therapist can sometimes be enough to give parents the understanding and knowledge to enable them to assist their child themselves at home.

Because children do not exist in isolation, expect as parents to be actively involved in your child’s treatment. Regular parent meetings to help with insights, discuss strategies and progress are crucial. The therapist will discuss the exact nature of your involvement with you.
